Dear Families,
Happy Thanksgiving! Here's what's happening in room 10.
Reading: The students presented their nonfiction projects this week. Some of the topics included: dogs, WWII, leopard geckos, bearded dragons, Cody Bellinger, military dogs, wind, sloths, and space. We look forward to listening to the rest of the projects on Monday, December 2. In addition, we will continue practicing some nonfiction reading skills such as summarizing, determining author's craft, ,seeing how pars of texts are related, and comparing and contrasting ideas.
We will have our post assessment on this unit on Friday, December 6. We will then spend the two weeks after that studying graphic novels!
Writing: Writing informational books has been the focus of our second writing unit. The students have chosen topics they know very well and have written short chapter books to share with their classmates. Starting next week, the kids will take one book through the entire writing process from drafting to publishing. We will also have our post assessment on information writing. Ask your child about the books they have written!
Math: We just completed our third math unit! The students learned concepts related to place value and decimals, and we worked with plotting points on coordinate grids. We will begin to study fractions starting December 2.
Word Study: Our next sort will be the suffixes -ly and -ily.
Social Studies: We are studying about early colonization in the US including the settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth. The students are creating advertisement posters to entice people to join their settlement of Jamestown or Plymouth. They will include details about the climate, geography, relationships with Native Americans, and opportunities for new settlers.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Susan Clarke
